Not even a matchup against a team that they blew out of HP Pavilion, 9-1, two months back could stop the Sharks' suddenly-losing ways on Friday.
But then, the Sharks were up against the Calgary Flames, a team that has been known to give the Sharks all kinds of trouble – particularly in the postseason – and wound up on the short end of a 4-3 contest at the Pengrowth Saddledome, San Jose's fifth straight defeat.
While the Sharks are tied with Chicago atop the Western Conference, the Flames are fighting for their playoff lives and have responded quite nicely. Calgary has won seven of its last 10 games and are deadlocked with Detroit for the eighth and final berth in the West.
Calgary jumped out to an early lead, scoring both of the first-period goals before Dany Heatley answered for the Sharks with his 37th goal of the season at 2:41 of the second. However, the Flames scored twice more in the period to boost the lead to 4-1.
The Sharks have a chance to break the string on Sunday when they travel to Edmonton to face the lowly, last-place Oilers. The next two games are also against non-playoff teams in Minnesota and Dallas, a team that the Sharks haven't had many problems with recently.
