San Jose, CA – The San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings met for their fourth of six meetings this season, as San Jose looked to extend their 8 game winning streak. The Kings had something different in mind, and they handed San Jose a tough loss, even though San Jose played a good game most of the night.
In the first period San Jose put 14 shots on goal to the Kings 11. Unfortunately for San Jose, late in the first period The Kings would come together and score three goals from Handzus, Moller, and Kopitar before the period ended.
The Kings certainly continued to play their game but continued to fail to find the net. They outshot the Kings in the first two periods almost 2 to 1, but haven’t found the net. End of second period they had 31 shots to the Kings 16.
The second period saw the Kings deliver two more goals from Smyth and Simmonds, and going into third period the sharks were trailing 5-0.
San Jose was stronger on face offs, and had more shots on goal, but no goals to show for it. Kings goalkeeper Jonathan Quick was a huge part of the goal shutout, as he continued time and again to show athleticism and great flexibility stopping all shots.
The third period started off with a quick goal for the Kings on Greiss, who had just come in for Nabokov. Kings 6, San Jose 5.
The Sharks fourth power play of the night launched their first goal of the night. Murray received a nice setup pass from Nichol, then he let go a strong left side shot through traffic at 3:21, finally beating Quick.
Patrick Marleau scored at the 13th minute, as he was coming in off the bench and fired in a quick goal with assist from Thornton and Clowe. That was his 27th goal of the season, showing why he is the second highest goal scorer in the NHL. Kings 6, Sharks 2
The Sharks just couldn’t find the net to go along with their shot dominance. If you looked at the possession and shots the goals should have been much closer for San Jose. San Jose ended up with 47 shots, Kings 20.
San Jose record moves to 24-16-3.
Their next match of regular season play will be at home Jan 6th against the Blues at 7:30pm.The Sharks will be in LA for a rematch in a week, scheduled to play January 11th at 7:30pm.
In the News:
Defenseman Douglas Murray was selected as the Sharks Foundation “Player of the Month” for the month of December and was recognized at the start of the game tonight.
