Barry Wagner's 3rd quarter TD run gave San Jose a 42-35 lead

The Sabercats’ title defense was painfully denied at the hands of two former Sabercats: quarterback John Dutton and receiver/defensive back Kevin McKenzie in the 56-48 Colorado Crush victory.

Sabercats fans will remember Dutton from San Jose’s ArenaBowl XVI championship, when he filled in for the injured Mark Grieb during their title run. On the way to the Conference Championship game, Dutton threw six touchdown passes on 19-29 passing for 315 yards.

John Elway’s Crush opened the game with an unorthodox ploy in the Arena league, opting to receive the opening kick-off, hoping to get off to a fast start against the potentially explosive Sabercats’ offense. McKenzie did just that, returning the opening kick-off for a 56 yard touchdown score.

Following a defensive stop, Dutton put the Crush up by two scores with less than five minutes elapsed in the contest.

Grieb and company mounted a fierce attack with Barry Wagner hauling in ten receptions and James Roe and Rodney Wright pulling in nine each; however two defensive stops by Colorado, an interception and a costly missed extra point send the `Cats home for the summer.

The Sabercats actually closed to 48-49, but Derek Schorejs failed to convert the extra point.
