The San Jose Sabercats watched their playoff hopes dim a little further as the wheels continued to come off of their title defense as Arizona handed the `Cats a 54-55 loss in the desert.
The Rattlers held the Sabercats, once feared offense, to only seven points in the second and third period combined. San Jose’s Mark Grieb quarterbacked the team to it’s third straight defeat on 29-44 passing for 289 yards and only four touchdowns. Grieb also threw two interceptions.
The defeat marks the first time in five seasons that the Sabercats will not claim at least ten victories.
Turnovers, including two Grieb interceptions, marked the beginning of the end for San Jose. San Jose tied the game 14-14 with a Rashied Davis kick off return to end the first quarter, only to open the second quarter surrendering a kick off return for a score to Tom Pace.
On the ensuing drive, Randy Gatewood interception of Grieb, led to another Rattler touchdown.
The Sabercats kept the game close, but in the end could not over come Shedrick Bonner and the Rattlers. Bonner finished the game 18-29, 228 yards and six touchdowns.
San Jose finishes the regular season, with their playoff hopes dwindling, at home next Saturday against the league leading Georgia Force.
