The Sabercats survived a 55-point Las Vegas Gladiators second half comeback fueled by a strategic use of special teams and a record tying eleven touchdown passing performance by Clint Dolezel.

San Jose’s Rashied Davis continued his offensive tear scoring seven touchdowns Monday night after putting up five scores last week. For the second consecutive week, Davis put points on the board with a rushing, receiving and a kick return touchdown. It was Davis’ kick return that stymied the home team Gladiators’ late run and broke a 55-55 tie.

The Sabercats enjoyed an 18 point first half lead, holding the Gladiators to only 20 first half points-largely on two Tremain Mack interceptions of Dolezel. Mack came up lame following the second pick and sat out the second half.

It looked at first as if Clevan Thomas, San Jose’s premier defensive standout, was going to take up where Mack had left off, picking off Dolezel on Vegas’ first series of the second half.

Sabercats’ Quarterback Mark Grieb went 17-24 for 240 yards, four touchdowns and one interception; but Davis was the star of the show with over 300 all purpose yards, three rushing touchdowns, three receiving scores and the kick return. Davis also hauled in ten catches and had a personal record 163 receiving yards.

Davis’ one-man show also included pulling down a late fourth quarter Gladiator on-side kick attempt, which led to his seventh touchdown on a 40 yard pass from Grieb.

With the win, the Sabercats put behind them their horrific start and pull even with the Los Angeles Avengers for the top spot in the Western Division.

The Sabercats return home on Sunday to take on the Arizona Rattlers at 6 p.m.
