Sunday afternoon, the San Jose Sabercats wrapped up their long road trip with a 57-38 victory in Florida against the Orlando Predators. The `Cats ended a two game losing streak that had dropped them to 1-3 on the young season.
Defense was the name of the game Sunday, as the Sabercats rebounded from allowing 60 points or more per game for three of the last four contests. Clevan Thomas, who had been sidelined almost all last season with injury, intercepted Joe Hamilton ending the Predators’ best chance to catch San Jose in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter.
Mark Grieb earned Offensive MVP honors by throwing for five touchdown passes on 22-35 passing for 272 yards. The Sabercats successfully defended the Predators opening drive after having deferred the opening kick off to Orlando. After the stop, San Jose took a quick 7-0 lead and only surrendered the edge once at the beginning of the second quarter.
In a kind of a homecoming, Barry Wagner, who had spent the first eight seasons of his AFL career in Orlando, found himself on the receiving end of two of Grieb’s touchdown tosses and rushed for a two-yard score. The fourth quarter touchdown marked the 400th touchdown of Wagner’s career.
The victory marks the end of a four game road trip and sets the stage for the `Cats to play seven of their last eleven games at the HP Pavilion. The Sabercats will be at home on Friday when they take on the Philadelphia Soul at 7:30 PM.
