San Jose Sabercats kicker Dan Frantz had a rough day amidst the din of Mardi Gras, as the New Orleans Voodoo held off a last second drive to win their home opener 61-62.

With time running out in the game, Frantz and the field goal team took the field for what would have been the game winner, but could only watch helplessly as his 32-yard attempt sailed wide right. Frantz also missed an extra point earlier in the game, after the `Cats had been moved back by a holding penalty.

The game was tightly contested from the opening drive, in which Mark Grieb led the `Cats to draw first blood in a four play touchdown march. Grieb finished the day 30-39, 352 yards passing, seven touchdowns and a combined 676 offensive yards.

Despite Grieb’s heroic performance, the Voodoo’s Andy Kelly kept pace, lighting up the scoreboard for a franchise record eight touchdown passes on 33-47 on 340 yards.

It was a bad day for the usually reliable Frantz to struggle as the two teams fought through seven ties and no team ever controlled a lead of more than seven points.

The loss drops the Sabercats to 1-2 and sets the stage for their showdown with the Los Angeles Avengers next Sunday at the Staples Center.
