The UFL alternative nation

The story of the California Redwoods-New York Sentinels football game was all about the fans. The atmosphere was relaxed. The same crowd you'd expect at a WWE wrestling event.

For the Press it was the no frills experience. Box lunches and no actual media guides. There was some confusion about who was who. Some of the players had different numbers than listed.

The same suit wearing, cell phone, self important types strutted about just like at the NFL games during the pre-game. The difference was the uptight vibe was not in evidence.

Under the warm sky of a balmy San Francisco night it was just entertainment at affordable prices. Fathers were holding their baby boys, young people were experiencing their first date, soccer fans from overseas and lots of young teenagers all just hanging out.

The players were giving their all. Most of them NFL castoffs or from state universities that pro scouts ignored. Maybe it was brand X pro football but nobody was complaining including the fans.

The play on the field was a far cry from NFL standards but the future motivation of the UFL could be tied into the probable lockout in the 2011 season for the NFL.

HD.NET covered the game on television. The team uniforms of both the Redwoods and the Sentinels mostly black ,white or green would surely cause any follower of fashion to contemplate suicide.

After his Redwoods team prevailed 24 to 7 over the Sentinels, Coach Denny Green held a brief press conference. He hyped the new league by dropping the names of former NFL players such as Sentinel wide receiver Koren Robinson and ex Oakland Raider wide out Doug Gabriel now of the Redwoods into his discussion of the UFL.

Some may speculate that the UFL is merely an opportunity for some affluent individuals to be able to say they own a football team. It really doesn't matter right now. Joe six pack can sit anywhere he wants, teenaged peggy sue can cruise the stands for young guns and next year come what may !
