The Redwoods transplanted to Sacramento

The California Redwoods are leaving San Francisco for Sacramento. The Redwoods are the second UFL team to move to smaller pastures. The New York franchise recently moved to Hartford, Connecticut.

The marketing theory is easy to understand. The teams want to be the big fish in a smaller pond.

Sacramento has a history of supporting “Triple – A” football. The Sacramento Surge of the World League of American Football enjoyed strong support from the community.

Sacramento was also a member of the Canadian Football League when it tried to expand south of the border. The Sacramento Gold Miners lasted two seasons in the Capital City.

The yet unnamed team will play its games at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State University. A crowd of 10,000 will make the 21,000 seat stadium look half full. In San Francisco, 10,000 fans in AT&T Park made the stadium feel empty.

The Sactown sports community has supported the NBA Kings and the Triple – A baseball Rivercats. The Rivercats have led the minor leagues in total attendance for the past five years.

The sporting community has not been so kind to the Kings. The poor performance on the court has led to a sharp decline in attendance. Even Sactown can lose patience with team that under performs.

The number one problem for the UFL in Sacramento will be the economy. The State of California is the big “corporate” employer. Forced furloughs and possible layoffs have made wallets thinner and entertainment dollars harder to come by for sports, movies and concerts.

Sacramento will welcome the UFL to town, but it will up to the UFL to prove it is worthy of the city’s support and dollars.
