If the Oakland Raiders find themselves in the middle of a ball game and in need of a back up quarterback, help may already be on the way if starter Daunte Culpepper finds himself overwhelmed.
Coach Lane Kiffin told the Oakland Tribune during practice that JaMarcus Russell will get some looks if Culpepper and the Raiders get too far behind the eight ball during a future game or if the Raiders can master whipping the opposing team in the late minutes of the game to get Russell some looks that way.
"I've said all along that you really want this guy to perform well, you want to do the best you can to put him in that situation," said Coach Kiffin. Russell says he feels good to go but Kiffin is weighing the options and he wants Russell to get that "certain feel" in taking snaps in the NFL and so far he's been looking good in practice with only one thing left to do and that's get in a ball game.
"You study these guys that have come out, these high picks there's a list of them. They haven't been able to rebound from when they go in right away." said Kiffin.
Culpepper will start against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday making his sixth start of the season. Talk has it that Russell will be the number two quarterback on Sunday and Kiffin says he's seriously looking at it.
Kiffin did say there was a chance to look for Russell as the number two quarterback and Culpepper knows that Russell is all the rage right now and in order to keep his starting job Culpepper will have to stay on top of his game Russell going number two certainly is a red flag if Culpepper intends on trying to keep his starting status.
"He is making strides, and he's continuing to work, he has a great attitude, and as long as he continues to have that attitude, he's going to be successful," said Culpepper on Russell.
J-Dogg's Raiders notes: LaMont Jordan who requested for a release from the team is close to getting one. Jordan who will be sitting on the bench for his third straight game is mad that Kiffin has sat him.
Kiffin has benched Jordan because Justin Fargas has a one up on the running back job. Comparisons to the Jerry Porter fiasco last season are different. In Porter's case he was benched because he and former head coach Art Shell had a pre season spat.
Jordan is sitting because Fargus has a handle on the job. Thus Jordan has requested for a trade. The Raiders have shopped Jordan this past week and it's expected by sometime after the Kansas City game that Jordan could be dealt somewhere. Jordan will be in Kansas City on Sunday and he is expected to sit down for that one as well.
Raiders at Chiefs kick off at 10AM on Sunday morning.
