The Oakland Raiders announced on Tuesday that Josh McCown despite his tough outing against one of the worst teams in the NFL the Houston Texans, will start against the mighty Chicago Bears at the Coliseum on Sunday.
McCown who played his first game in five weeks after playing in week three against the Cleveland Browns and injured his foot will try again. McCown admitted that being rushed and pummeled is not what he had in mind in the game plan.
Raider head coach Lane Kiffin said that McCown and the club is going to have to get focused and read the plays a whole lot better against the 3-5 visiting Bears. Kiffin felt that McCown was better in the second half of the game against the Texans and that
McCown can bring more to the table this Sunday, "Looking the whole thing over, it was something to build on, in the second half, on offense, we played for the most part the way we'd played the whole game," said Kiffin.
Down in the stands fans were chanting for rookie JaMarcus Russell the NFL's number one draft pick from Alabama to come in and replace McCown. The wishes of the paying customers fell on deaf ears as Kiffin is sticking with McCown for as long as he can.
Word is if McCown falters in the next three weeks or less the Raiders will use Russell to see what he can do. Russell has looked great in practice but everyone is curious to see what he could do in the real thing. Russell is anxious to get out there and take some snaps and the Raiders are only half way through the season.
McCown knows there were mistakes made last Sunday and would like to make things work better, "We're just not pulling our weight, everybody has a mistake at the wrong time. Whether it is turnovers or if it's on my part, or penalties, they come at bad times, they kill your momentum and affect your consistency and your tempo. I look at myself first those are things I have to correct," said McCown
The Raiders right now are without Sam Williams who will miss this Sunday's game with a shoulder stinger. Williams has missed four games thus far.
The Raiders are proud of what rookie defensive end Jay Richardson did he jumped high to block a field goal attempt last Sunday against the Texans. Richardson was a basketball player at Ohio State and knew something about leaping for block points, "I couldn't feel my hand for about three or four plays after that," said Richardson.
Richardson gave credit to Terdell Sands who moved two linemen out of the way so that Richardson can get a shot at blocking the ball, "Just ran behind his big (butt), he's the biggest man alive." said Richardson.
No worries concerning Nnamdi Asomugha who had MRI work done on his injured left knee. Coach Kiffin said that Asomugha could be back this Sunday against the Bears.
The Raiders host the Chicago Bears for a 1PM kick-off at the Coliseum for week number nine of the season.
