By now, most teams have figured out who is going to be the starting quarterback for the upcoming season. However, after three preseason games, the Raiders are still deciding who’s going to be their main signal-caller.
Daunte Culpepper got the nod during Friday’s 20-10 win over the St. Louis Rams, and he looked good in the process. He completed four of his eight passes (two of his incompletions resulted in penalties against the defense) for 47 yards and also threw for a touchdown.
Josh McCown, who replaced Culpepper, also was impressive. In what was his best outing in a Raider uniform, he completed six of his nine throws for 138 yards and led a 65-yard touchdown drive late in the second quarter that lasted all of 40 seconds.
The defense was simply dominating, particularly the starting unit. The pressure that was applied by the front four forced Rams starting quarterback Marc Bulger, normally one of the more accurate passers in the NFL, into completing eight of 21 throws for 109 yards.
The Rams didn’t have Steven Jackson for Friday’s game, and Oakland’s defense held Jackson’s fill-in, Brian Leonard, to 20 yards on six carries.
The Raiders will play the Seattle Seahawks on Aug. 30 at Qwest Field for their final preseason game before hosting the Detroit Lions in the regular season opener.
