The Raiders (1-0) sail into their second pre-season game Saturday night when they host the Chicago Bears (0-1). Fresh off their 17-9 victory against the Cowboys last week, the Raiders will continue to shake the rust off and work on defining their roster.
Oakland will have to take a closer look at their Quarterback situation, with Charlie Frye placed on this injured reserve list on Thursday. Frye started three games for the Raiders last season. Veteran Kyle Boller, one-time Heisman Trophy finalist Colt Brennan, and Brad Gradkowski are still in camp and in competition to back-up Jason Campbell. Gradkowski missed the Cowboy game with a sore groin.
Last week, the Raiders mustered enough offense to notch a win, but will look to see a bit more from their starting offense, even with three pre-season games remaining. While Oakland scored an impressive 17 points in the fourth quarter, granted against the fourth quarter pre-season Cowboys, they were held scoreless for the first three quarters. In his first four drives for the Silver and Black, Campbell went an unimpressive 7-12 in 20 snaps, producing a total of 60 yards from scrimmage. Boller, who went 12-21 and 148 yards, and one touchdown. Special Teams and defense provided the rest of the Raiders’ scoring against Dallas.
The Raiders first team will have their work cut out for them this week as they will face the Bears’ stalwart defense which features Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs and new-comer Julius Peppers. The defense will have their work cut out for them with Jay Cutler, Matt Forte, Devin Hester and Johnny Knox lining up for the “mad genius” Mike Martz on offense.
Running Back Darren McFadden has also been sidelined this week, but is expected to rejoin practice soon. Whether or not he will play on Saturday has not been disclosed, but at this point seems unlikely.
