KANSAS CITY, Kansas - The San Jose Earthquakes late season bid to make the playoffs ended today as they were defeated by Kansas City 3-2. The Quakes met their end with a dramatic stoppage time goal right before the final whistle blew.

The Quakes only have two games left in the season, and it would not be possible now to make a playoff spot. Kansas City, who were last in their division recently, have moved to the fourth spot with a span of wins in their conference.

The match went back and forth, starting off with the Wizards striking first in the 18th minute. Claudio Lopez sent a pass across to Thompson and kept moving. Thompson sent it right back to him and he got a good look at the net. He hit a left footed shot across, beating Cannon and finding the net.

San Jose would not stand by long, as they fought back 2 minutes later for a goal as Arturo Alvarez sent a cross into the penalty area to Scott Sealy. Sealy, an ex Kansas City player, bounced a header goal past Wizard's keeper Kevin Hartman for a score. This was Sealy's fifth net of the season.

Lopez stepped up 7 minutes later for Kansas City as he deflected a pass from Jack Jewsbury across to Davy Arnaud. Arnaud would push the ball into the left side of the net, easily beating Cannon for a goal. This would be Arnaud's sixth goal of the season.

The Wizards were able to hold on to the one goal lead until the 66th minute until Shea Salinas came in and scored his first goal of the season. Salinas caught a loose ball about 15 yards out and out a hard shot into the net.

It looked like it would end in a tie until a late corner kick for Kansas City turned the Quakes hopes upside down. Lopez sent an arcing kick into the penalty area that found a waiting Gomez. Gomez pushed a shot past Cannon giving the Wizards their 4th win in the last 6 weeks.

San Jose (7-13-9) has been winless since September 6th. Their 30 points are the lowest in the league and they have now been eliminated from playoff contention.
