Santa Clara, CA – The San Jose Earthquakes sought to get a critical win today as they took on Chivas USA at home. While San Jose looked to keep their playoff hopes alive, Chivas could possibly lock in a playoff berth today with a win. Unfortunately for the Quakes, the Chivas walked away with three points today, leaving San Jose no closer to a playoff spot.

The first half started with Chivas USA controlling most of the offense. That would pay off quickly in the 7th minute as Eskandarian sent a long pass up to Justin Braun who got a fast jump on the Quakes defenders. Braun was able to get a clear look on Cannon and put a low shot past the Quakes keeper for a goal.

San Jose began to rally around the 30th minute and put up quite a few attempts on goal before the half ended with Chivas holding on to the one goal lead.

The second half saw the Quakes come out of the locker rooms playing with the sense of urgency. The question is where was that urgency when the game first started. They were holding the Chivas offense back completely until the 64th minute when Chivas got their first shot on goal of the second half.

The Quakes best chance at an equalizer came in the 76th minute. Ronnie O’Brien beat two defenders with footwork on the right side then fired off a hard shot that just missed the left post.

From that point forward, the Chivas were able to hold the Quakes offense from scoring. The Chivas never even made a substitution in the game.
