Santa Clara, CA – The San Jose Earthquakes held on to a 1 goal lead for almost 70 minutes to beat the New York Red Bulls in their second to last match at home. San Jose still has a chance to make the playoffs, but they would need to win all their remaining games and still get help to get in.

San Jose (7-12-7) was happy to help New York (4-18-6) extend their road winless streak to 26 games, and to solidify the Red Bulls in last place in the league. San Jose broke their road winless streak last week and followed up this week with a win, starting a 2 game winning streak.

In the 22nd minute, Arturo Alvarez pushed up the right line into two defenders, tried to split the defenders Hall and Petke as he crossed into the penalty box. One of the defenders, Hall, caught him with a trip, drawing the penalty kick. Ryan Johnson punched it in with a hard low shot to the right net, putting the Quakes up 1-0.

The Quakes controlled most of the offense in the first half, leading shots and shots on goal by double the Red Bulls. The second half netted no goals from either side, but both teams pushed to keep trying to score until the bitter end of stoppage time.

San Jose plays again at home this Wednesday, October 7th, as they take on FC Dallas at 7:00 p.m. PST
