Washington – San Jose snapped their 20 game road winless streak today as they defeated DC United 2-1. The Quakes aren’t going to the playoffs, but getting this win was very important for them.

Head Coach Frank Yallop commented “It was a long time coming. We have been very close recently to getting a win on the road. I am proud of the guys for continuing to believe in ourselves on the road. We stuck to the task and got a nice three points away from home.”

San Jose had a tough first half, DC United controlled the flow of the game as Jose Moreno put up the 1-0 goal 26 minutes in. San Jose would recover and set a new direction for the second half.

Coach Yallop said “The past few games we have made some adjustments at halftime that helped us and that was the case again tonight. Arturo (Alvarez) came on and did a good job and that helped open up more space for Ryan (Johnson). It was a great comeback by us and hopefully we can build on this.”

Ryan Johnson said “It was a tough game from the start. D.C. had a lot of possession in the first half, but we stayed focused and got ourselves back into the match. We put away our chances in the second half and made a good defensive stand to get the win. It feels good to get the win on the road.”

The Quakes would score their first goal in the 58th minute, then the game winner came in the 73rd as Ryan Johnson was able to send a header off a rebound from the crossbar in dramatic fashion.

"The second it hit the post, I knew I was going to hit it first time," Johnson said. "I wasn't going to take it down or do anything like that. So I tried to position my body and get everything behind it I could."

Ramiro Corrales, the Quakes team captain, commented on the win today “We have been a bit unlucky lately. We could have had two wins against Colorado , but we gave up some late goals. We wanted to close this one out correctly and we were able to do that. It was a good performance from everyone.”

San Jose plays again next week at 8:00 pm at home against the New York Red Bulls. Coincidentally, the Red Bulls own an even longer road winless streak than the Quakes did, they are at 25 winless games to date. Maybe this bodes well for San Jose.
