San Jose faced off with Real Salt Lake today at Buck Shaw stadium in Santa Clara to a home crowd attendance of 10,059. This match was very important to both teams, as they are both within a few points of third place in the Western Conference.
San Jose would not extend its unbeaten streak today, as Real Salt Lake handed them a 3-2 loss. This game was hard fought on both sides, with the intensity starting in the first few minutes of the game.
In the third minute, Real Salt Lake midfielder sent a long pass to a racing Yura Movsisyan. Yura beat the San Jose defenders and took a clear shot on the goal that beat Joe Cannon on the left side of the net.
Real Salt Lake continued controlling ball play until Ryan Cochrane of San Jose sent a long pass up the middle to Darren Huckerby. Huckerby raced the defenders to the RSL keeper and sent a shot into the right side of the net as he beat the diving keeper.
Quakes fans thought they were going to get a second goal in the 37th minute from a set piece outside the box. O’Brien sent a shot hard into keeper Nick Nick Rimando, who dropped it. Scott Sealy was waiting in the right place and fired the dropped ball into the net. It wasn’t to be so, as the line referee’s flag waved up indicating Sealy was offsides on the kick.
The second half started with the same intensity level as the first. San Jose’s Darren Huckerby and Arturo Alvarez connected to score a goal. Huckerby brought the ball up the left side, finding Alvarez open. Alvarez put a no look pass behind him to a running Huckerby. Huckerby took the ball through two RSL defenders and fired it past the goalkeeper in the 46th minute.
Real Salt Lake was not phased in the slightest bit, as Kyle Beckerman sent a long pass to Yura Movsisyan again. Déjà vu for the Quakes, as Movsisyan got a clear look on the goal and burned Joe Cannon for a goal in the 48th minute.
Real Salt Lake would continue its relentless assault on the defense of San Jose, and drew a foul in the 61st minute. This would prove to be a surprising set piece goal for them as Javier Morales sent a lofting shot over the defense wall and into the left side of the net for a goal.
The rest of the second half was controlled by Real Salt Lake, as they put shot after shot on the boards. San Jose could just not get its offense going to make up for the 3rd goal that Real Salt Lake put up.
With this loss, San Jose will remain in last place in the Western Conference standings.
