Santa Clara, CA – The Earthquakes had to settle for a tie Friday night, as the Colorado Rapids came up with a heartbreaker penalty shot in the 90th minute stoppage time to equalize.

San Jose put up a great game, coming out in the first half strong as they have shown in their recent games to do. It almost paid off in the third minute with Shea Salinas shooting the ball but bouncing off the post and Cornell Glen almost got the follow-up shot.

Early pressure would pay off though as Ryan Johnson was able to put up an impressive header that would come from a throw-in by McDonald in about the eighth minute.

The Quakes third shutout in five games was in sight, just in grasping range, when the unthinkable happened in the last penalty time. Ryan Johnson got called for a foul in the box against a Colorado defender, giving up a penalty kick. Colorado had rushed up and put every man in the box for this play.

Quakes head coach Frank Yallop is quoted to say “Having seen it again, it probably was a penalty," he continues, "I just think, in the context of the game, do you have to give it? Maybe not."

And just like that, Colorado equalized on the penalty kick and it held out for 1 point each in their conference.
