Santa Clara, CA – The San Jose Earthquakes hosted the Houston Dynamo tonight to a record home crowd of over 10,515. Neither team were willing to give any room in this match, as they fought hard to a 1-1 tie.
After a first scoreless first half, the match heated up as the teams came back from half time. The Quakes were the first ones to strike in the 50th minute.
Arturo Alvarez sent a pass just outside the penalty box to Ronnie O’Brien, who fired a right footed arcing shot to the far post that beat Dynamo goalkeeper Pat Onstad.
Shortly after Houston brought on Brian Ching, the Dynamo offense put on the pressure on the San Jose defense, as Ching scored a goal. Stuart Holden sent a pass from the right side across the defenders to Ching, who was wide open and put the shot into the net with a well placed header.
In the 85th minute, Eddie Robinson of the Dynamo got his second foul, resulting in a red card. The Quakes tried to put pressure on, but the Dynamo defense stepped up and stopped their offense, preventing any further goals. The game card count: Houston 6 yellow cards, San Jose 1.
San Jose (7-9-8) extends its undefeated streak to nine games and Houston (10-5-9) moves to 6-1-1 in its last 8 matches.
