Quakes deliver shocking loss to Kansas City

Santa Clara, CA – The San Jose Earthquakes continue their seven game undefeated streak today with a stunning defeat of the Kansas City Wizards. This gives them 3 points, and puts them in striking position of Chivas, Colorado, and Los Angeles for the 4th place in the Western Conference.

The Quakes were quick to open up the offense, as Huckerby pushed the ball into the middle in the first minute, drawing defenders and creating a pass to very open space. Scott Sealy raced the keeper for it, and nearly got a shot on goal as Wizards keeper Kevin Hartman stopped him.

San Jose continued to pressure Kansas City through the first half, dominating shots with 7 to KC’s 2 shots.

In the 43rd minute, San Jose’s Ronnie O’Brien brought sent a high pass over to a waiting Arturo Alvarez, who pushed it high into the net with a strong header, giving San Jose its first goal.

Kansas City came out of halftime much more energized, and they put up strong offensive play after play, pressuring the Quakes defense to its limits. In the 51st minute the Wizards had one of their best chances of the half as Davy Arnaud put a rocketing shot right into a diving Cannon who stopped him.

The Quakes offense started to take over control of the game in the last ten minutes. In the 83rd minute, it would pay off with a goal.

Francisco Lima sent a high pass over to Ryan Johnson, who headed it directly over to Huckerby on the other side of the net. Huckerby dropped it into the goal with a header. The momentum had shifted to the Quakes and they never let it go from there.
