Santa Clara, CA - San Jose shocked the Kansas City Wizards tonight with a 1-0 defeat in final stoppage time. San Jose and Kansas City couldn’t bring it together tonight until the very last minute when Chris Wondolowski would come in and score his second goal of the season in dramatic fashion.

The first half was a scoreless half, but not for lack of San Jose’s effort. The Quakes came out right from the start with their eyes on the goal, determined to dominate the first half. San Jose would put up Eleven shots the first half to Kansas City’s five.

In the first minute Alvarez and Glen almost connected for a goal, and a minute later Glen was in the thick of another attempt where he and the keeper and a defender collapsed around the ball, and he tapped it in thinking he was in the clear. The call went to KC though, so no goal.

Joe Cannon for the Quakes came up with a few clutch saves that kept San Jose in the game. In the 4th minute he intercepted an attempt by Claudio Lopez who had broken past the defenders. He also stopped another huge attempt in the 38th minute where KC Jack Jewsbury fired a hard shot on goal.

Cornell Glen left late in the first quarter, and even though Quincy Amerikwa normally brings a high energy when he subs in, even he couldn’t fire the scoring machine up as the first half ended in a draw.

The second half was really more of the same. Both teams were fighting to get their offenses going and neither side could mount any strong attacks for most of the half. Kansas city put up a couple rallies where they held the ball on the San Jose net for 4-5 minutes, but they didn’t come away with a goal.

The energy of the game moved into a flurry of yellow cards toward the end. Both teams seemed to be losing control in their frustration of not scoring for the night. There were 5 yellow cards after the 80th minute. But wait, it was about to change.

San Jose’s Chris Wondolowski came in as a very late game sub for Chris Leitch, as head coach Frank Yallop sought to pull out all the stops. Wondolowski, in stoppage time would shock the entire stadium with an amazing header that rolled low into the far post for a goal. Ramiro Corrales, who has been out a bit of the season with injury would cross a pass over near Wondolowski. He reached down and found the ball and gave it a nudge in the right direction.

In stoppage time the Quakes pulled out a goal to win the game 1-0. Not only would Wondolowski be the hero for the team, but he showed the fans appreciation as he was one of the last players to leave the field by jumping over the barriers and high fiving fans on the way out.
