San Francisco, CA – San Jose and Columbus Crew squared off as part of the night of champions event, playing before FC Barcelona and CD Guadelara headed off later that evening. This was one of the first MLS games played at Candlestick Park, and it didn’t go well for the Quakes who were hoping to re-surge and win coming off last week’s powerful win over Seattle.

Columbus would prove to be the stronger team in the second half; neither team scored in the first half. Columbus would put up 3 goals in the last 21 minutes of the game, breaking the Quakes hopes and all their hard work.

The Quakes came out strong and put up a pressure game in the first half similar to last week. In the third minute, Ryan Johnson hooked up the ball with Darren Huckerby on a strong play, but Crew keeper William Hessmer shut them down. In fact, Hesmer would shut down Cornell Glen’s quick firing attempts on goal the rest of the night, and earned another shutout.

San Jose lost 3-0, and now they look like there is no chance they can make the playoffs for their second year back to the league.

The Quakes will travel to Kansas City on the 22nd.
