Santa Clara, CA - San Jose returned home to a crowd of 9,022 fans who wanted to see a great game. The Quakes delivered a great game, even though they tied DC United 2-2, they were the stronger team and the fans were happy to see some goals scored. 1 point is better than nothing in the Quakes attempt to move out of last place in the Western Conference.
As the battle for the first half kicked off, DC United was given a gift. The right side line referee assistant seemed to think that Michael Zaher was too far behind DC Luciano Emilio when he tackled him, and caused him to fall down inside the penalty box. United’s Gomez stepped up and accepted the gift, beating Cannon on the simple penalty kick.
United would strike again in the 21st minute in yet another frustrating play involving the same assistant referee and Michael Zaher. Jacobsen of United would fire off a pass or shot toward the middle of the net, which deflected right off of Zaher. Gomez was clearly in an offside position when the kick was made, standing right behind the Quake defenders. The line ref did not call him offsides though. Gomez grabbed up the deflected ball and face to face with Cannon he put it into the open part of the net. The Quakes defenders were so upset that Hernandez, normally very cool headed, got a yellow card for dissent.
Ryan Johnson would see his seventh goal of the season happen in the 36th minute, as the Quakes offensive pressure finally paid off. Zaher also shook off his bad luck, as he sent a solid cross into the front of the net, finding Cornell Glen who just barely got a head on it. The ball would drop down to a waiting Johnson who fired it past DC United keeper Josh Wicks.
Both teams put up some impressive plays as the half ended, but the score would still stay at 2-1 in favor of United going into the second half.
San Jose came out playing the stronger team. They started the offensive pressure right away, creating some nice plays in front of the net. Again, the pressure would pay off, this time in a referee call that actually went their way.
In the 63rd minute, San Jose would get a corner kick and when the ball was sent into the middle, DC United defender put his hand on the ball and was given a yellow card for an intentional handball. Cornell Glen would take San Jose’s gift and score the equalizer on DC.
In the 79th minute, Darren Huckerby went down just outside the box from a United slide tackle, but the referee, who was standing right behind him, would give no call even though the tackler didn’t even get a foot on the ball.
In the 90th minute it looked like Quincy Amerikwa would force open a shot in front of the goal, but the Quakes offense couldn’t quite bring the shot into the net.
