Earthquakes score in the nick of time

Arturo Alvarez scored the game winner in the 90th minute as San Jose handed the Philadelphia Union their first home loss in history, 2-1.

Alvarez took on goalkeeper Chris Seitz one-on-one, with an assist by Convey. It was a career-high eighth assist for Convey.

The Earthquakes won for the first time since May 22, breaking Philadelphia’s two-game win streak.

Shots and shots on goal were in favor of The Union with 17 and 10 to 8 and 3 respectively.

Philadelphia scored in the 14th minute, with Fred scoring, aided by Danny Mwanga.

Two minutes later, Fred‘s corner kick resulted in a shot by Andrew Jacobsen, whose shot hit the left post.

In the 32nd minute, another corner kick by Fred resulted in a goal mouth block.

The Earthquakes’ first shot came in the 35th minute.

San Jose Joey Gjertsen hit the crossbar in the 42nd minute

The Quakes’ Cornell Glen tied the game in the 45th minute with his first goal of the season, helped by Chris Wondolowski, with his first assist.

In the second half, the Union had two shots on goal, one in the 46th minute, the other in the 48th minute.

Fred received a yellow card for a reckless foul in the 52nd minute.

Gjertsen had a shot on goal in the 55th minute.

Philadelphia Roger Torres’s corner kick in the 61st minute resulted in a goal mouth block.

Convey’s kick in the 67th minute resulted in a high shot by Brandon McDonald.

In the 69th minute, Wondolowski received a yellow card for a reckless foul.

The Union increased their attack as the game drew closer to the end of regulation. They had shots on goal in the 71st, 74th, 80th and 87th minutes, with Sebastien Le Toux getting the last two.

Le Toux had a corner kick in the 92nd minute, but it resulted in a high shot by Michael Orozco.

The game ended in the 93rd minute with a yellow card issued to San Jose’s Ramiro Corrales for unsporting behavior against Le Toux.

Game notes: The Earthquakes’ Jon Busch earned his first win as he started for the third straight game. Saturday is when San Jose takes on club partner Tottenham Hotspur at 1pm.
