If the first half was the whole game, San Jose would have won, but instead the score was a 1-1 tie with D.C. United as the Earthquakes returned to their 2000-2005 blue uniforms.
The uniforms will henceforth be worn for special games.
In the 7th minute, the Earthquakes’ Ryan Johnson got the ball in the net, but was called offsides.
Not long after San Jose newcomer Sam Cronin had a shot on goal in the 15th minute, teammate Ike Opara scored to give the Earthquakes the 1-0. Opara’s goal was preceded by a corner kick from Bobby Convey.
When D.C. United was threatening in the 21st minute, Bobby Burling made a nice backwards kick to thwart them temporarily. On the second attempt, Convey blocked the ball and looked winded afterwards as he bent over to seemingly catch his breath. It eventually was a reactivation of sore ribs, which will be looked at with an x-ray Sunday. Convey then left the field, but returned to play after a few seconds.
D.C. United’s Adam Cristman had a chance near the goal in the 24th/25th minute, but couldn’t get near enough to the ball before it went out of bounds.
In the 26th minute, Convey’s shot went just right after a failed header from a teammate and a kick from the side.
D.C. United’s Santino Quaranta required a little attention after knocking heads with Hernandez at the end of the first half.
D.C. United tied the game in the 54th minute, when Andy Najar got the pass from Stephen King on the left, and kicked it in from the right side.
Alvarez and Convey missed each other on the pass right in front of the net in the 69th minute.
Glen rocketed a shot right at goaltender Troy Perkins in the 84th minute.
San Jose Coach Frank Yallop made three offensive substitutions in the second half. Arturo Alvarez, questionable with a left hamstring strain, came in for Steven Beitashour in the 65th minute, Glen entered for Johnson in the 73rd minute and Omar Jasseh entered for Chris Wondolowski in the 86th minute.
Attendance was 10, 304.
Jon Busch was in net for the Earthquakes.
Game notes: On Wednesday, San Jose goalkeeper Andrew Weber and midfielder Ramon Sanchez were released. The Earthquakes will play their club partner, Tottenham Hotspur, at 1pm on July 17. The match against the Union September 18, is now September 15 at home at 7pm. Johnson also scored in the last meeting versus D.C. United. July 10, San Jose travels to the East Coast to face the Philadelphia Union, at 3pm, instead of the original 2:30pm time.
