Earthquakes tie with second-place Real Salt Lake

The first two MLS teams to play after the World Cup break, San Jose and Real Salt Lake, battled in a 0-0 tie Friday.
It was Real Salt Lake’s fourth consecutive shutout.
The Earthquakes’ goalkeeper Jon Busch who played for the first time in the teams’ last meeting and earned a shutout last game, started for the first time in MLS regular season play.
San Jose is 0-2-1 against Real Salt Lake this season.
The Earthquakes got the first four shots on goal in the game, the first in the 7th minute by Chris Wondlowski, the second by Jon Busch in the 17th minute, the third by Ramiro Corrales in the 31st minute and the fourth by Corrales again in the 34th minute.
Real Salt Lake got their first shot on goal in the 40th minute by Will Johnson.
San Jose also had five of the first eight shots.
The Earthquakes continued with the shots on goal in the second half, getting three compared to Real Salt Lake’s zero.
This time, however, Real Salt Lake dominated the shot attempts early, with four out of five shots.
Corrales received a yellow card in the 58th minute for a tactical foul against Fabian Espindola, who was probable before the game with a left hamstring strain. Teammate Busch received one in the 60th minute for delaying a restart.
Game notes: San Jose midfielder Andre Luiz will miss the rest of the season as he is to undergo left knee surgery, more specifically the MCL (medical collateral ligament) and the PCL (posterior cruciate ligament). As part of Amway Global Kicks for Kids, Kidango-Arbuckle after-school program, which caters to low-income children, were treated to a visit by midfielder Brad Ring. For allocation money, the Earthquakes acquired Toronto FC midfielder Sam Cronin, who debuted in and started the game. San Jose faces DC United at home next, July 3rd at 7pm.
