While World Cup games were going on in South Africa, San Jose and Chivas USA participated in the first Sacramento Cup, with San Jose scoring one more than Chivas USA, to edge them 6-5 in a penalty shootout Saturday.
The Earthquakes' Jason Hernandez kicked in the winning tally. Both sides made their first five shots before San Jose keeper Jon Busch made a kick save against Chivas USA keeper Dan Kennedy, opening the door for Hernandez. Busch was in net for in place of regular goalkeeper Joe Cannon.
During the 90 minute regulation, the only action either net saw then was a shot on goal by Chivas USA's Chukwudi Chijindu.
For Chivas USA, Gerson Mayen, Carlos Borja, Maicon Santos, Michael Umana and Jose Macotelo made their penalty kicks, while Chris Wondolowski, Ramiro Corrales, Javier Robles, Ryan Johnson and Ramon Sanchez scored for the Earthquakes. Wondolowski was the only one who got a goal in net that also got one in the teams' last meeting on April 24th.
Yellow cards were issued to Chivas USA's, Mariano Trujillo, Mayen, Cuesta, Johnson and Beitashour.
San Jose had fewer shots and fouls than Chivas USA, with 4 and 7 to 9 and 16 respectively.
Though Chivas USA has a 4-2-4 All-Time edge, they are tied in scoring at thirteen goals apiece.
Busch stated regarding the win, “It’s important that we won the game. We want to build a winning mentality here in the locker room and it doesn’t matter if it is a friendly, a regular season game, or a US Open Cup game, it doesn’t matter. We just want to have that consistency..."
Game notes: Opara was probable with a shoulder strain. This exhibition match was held at Raley Field in Sacramento and was the second time San Jose has played in Sacramento. In 2002, they played in the CONCACAF Champions Cup against Honduras's CD Olimpia. Only one current player on this year's squad played in the game, and that is Ramiro Corrales. The last time Raley Field saw soccer action was in 2008. Regular season action for the Earthquakes resumes June 25 when they travel to Rio Tinto Stadium to take on Real Salt Lake.
