It was disappointing in the sense that the San Jose Earthquakes (3-7-1) lost to the Los Angeles Galaxy (6-4-2) for the second time this season and lost at home. However, one wouldn’t know it with the excited energy the 39, 872 fans were enthusing. The much anticipated game was crazy even before the game as BART was packed. It was a 3-0 loss, similar in score to the 2-0 loss at the start of the season.
However, as Coach Frank Yallop put it, looking at the “whole picture,” the whole team “played better than the points showed.” The “second goal killed” them; however, they had a “good talk at halftime” and Yallops “saw a response.” The “3 goals” LA Edson Buddle scored were “quality.”
Star and Captain David Beckham had an assist.
There were a lot of close calls on both sides in terms of scoring chances. LA had several, of which one time the ball hit the post. SJ had 2 close scoring chances too in the first half.
LA didn’t score off David Beckham’s first corner kick at 5:04. However, they scored at 5:53 when Edson Buddle kicked the ball past Joe Cannon into the net to make it 1-0. Assists were credited to Josh Tudela and Beckham.
Earthquake Ronnie O’Brien had a corner kick at 10:25; however, Steve Cronin got his hands on the ball. The same thing happened with Beckham during his second corner kick at 21:50.
3 SJ players received yellow cards- John Cunliffe, Adam Smarte and Ryan Johnson. The last card was highly contested in the sense that the home crowd was outraged and yelled “bull****” after the call.
A lot of the goals in the game went over the top of the net.
The Earthquakes had 2 close calls in the second half.
LA scored their second goal in the 63rd minute, with Buddle scoring again, assisted by Ante Jazic and Ely Allen.
Buddle just kept on scoring when he had his third goal in the 68th minute, assisted by Mike Randolph and Jazic.
Game notes: One of the opposing team stars, Landon Donvoan, was missing because of commitment to the National Team. LA broke a first-place tie with Houston with this win.
San Jose’s Eric Denton against made a nice save against LA’s Chris Klein in Galaxy space.
SJ’s next game is Wednesday, 6pm at Real Salt Lake.
