San Jose came back from behind two times to tie Colombus in a 1-1 victory Saturday at Buck Shaw Stadium.
With the tie, the Earthquakes moved to sole possession of third in the Western Conference and the Crew increased their first-place lead in the East.
The game got off to an interesting false start when play started and the ball went to the Earthquakes' keeper. However, Joe Cannon wasn't there, as he was getting his hat to block out the sun after last game and no one realized it.
The Crew went right at it. They scored early when Guillermo Barros Schelotto took a shot on goal, which Cannon blocked, and then the ball got caught in between his legs. Colombus persisted kicking and the ball went to the side of Cannon where there were two guys wide open. Eddie Gaven scored, aided by Jason Garey in the 5th minute.
The Earthquakes was quick to even the score, however, when Arturo Alvarez made a nice shot right between and the goalpost, helped by Andre Luiz in the very next minute.
Colombus's Robbie Rogers had a breakway in the 8th minute. His shot on goal narrowly missed the net, sailing just right over the top.
Rogers also had a nice skilled sprint in the 12th minute, when he got past three defenders.
Cannon made some nice leg saves and a save at one of the goalposts.
In the 29th minute, from San Jose's Chris Wondolowski, Ryan Johnson made a nice shot on goal, but William Hesmer was just able to get his hands on it
The Earthquakes' Cornell Glen came in for Alvarez in the 59th minute. It was Glen's fifth sub appearance.
He made the first shot on goal in the 67th minute in what was a very middle of the field battle until then.
The Crew then struck first again, when off a corner kick by Schelotto, Chad Marshall headed the ball into the net's right corner in the 70th minute to make the score 2-1.
Glen was all alone in front of Hesmer with the ball in the 75th minute, but then the whistle blew.
San Jose retied the game in the 79th minute, when off a free kick by Bobby Convey, Scott Sealy headed the ball to Wondolowski, who headed the ball into the net. Sealy had entered the game as a sub in the 60th minute.
Coach Frank Yallop remarked, he "thought we had some good stuff, especially in the second half...We're not playing our best soccer right now...The last twenty minutes of the first half, I thought we were the better team."
Cannon commented, "Give credit to both teams...I think they're (Colombus) ahead of us in maturity and how they approach games. We matched their work ethic...I can't say enough about the fight our guys brought."
Game notes: For the Earthquake's, Joey Gjertsen, questionable with a left quad strain, did not play. Luiz returned after missing his last game because of left knee internal derangement. Steven Beitashour and Alvarez, who made his first start since April 10, after coming on during halftime last game, were also on the official lineup. Chris Leitch and Brad Ring did not make it off the probable lineup. San Jose play again on Saturday, when they face FC Dallas at 5:30pm.
