Santa Clara, CA - The winless streak is over for San Jose! After a scoreless first half, San Jose would come out fighting and score 2 goals, holding on for a 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake at home in front of a crowd of 10,153.
As the first half started, Real Salt Lake came out strong and aggressive on the ball. The Quakes looked disoriented early in the half, but started to come together after the 20th minute. In the 20th minute, Johnson forced a shot by beating a defender, it didn’t score, but it did seem to energize the offense some.
Five minutes later the best attempt of the first half came on a Ramiro Corrales header point blank to the RSL keeper, but it was stopped and the follow-up kick was flipped over the bar, ending the play.
The first half ended as RSL and San Jose both only put up 2 shots on goal, both teams looking to the second half to get their offenses started.
The locker room chat with Coach Yallop must have snapped something because San Jose played a different game the second half. It took them seven minutes to score their first goal of the night. Michael Zaher sent a nice cross pass in that found Cornell Glenn. Glenn hit an amazing header that went to the lower left corner of the net.
The 63rd minute brought another goal for San Jose. Arturo Alvarez moved the ball around 2 defenders heading to the middle of the field, then fired a bending left footed shot that found the top left corner of the net. In the ensuing goal excitement, Alvarez ripped his shirt off and took a yellow card from the ref.
Real Salt Lake showed they were still in the game with a quick goal by Findley; he took a throw in from the left side, got a free look at net, and fired a hard right footed high shot into the net, giving RSL their first goal of the night.
San Jose would hold on to their one goal lead in the last 10 minutes, earning a much needed win and ending their five game winless streak.
San Jose plays another 2 road games coming up, then they will return home on June 20th to play their rival Los Angeles Galaxy at the Oakland Coliseum.
