Santa Clara, CA – The Columbus Crew (5-1-0) came to San Jose to extend their lead in the Eastern Division and accomplished just that. The Crew also continued its strong start to the season, five straight wins being their best start in over 10 years.
Robbie Rogers scored two goals in the second half, which lead the Crew to a 3-2 victory. These were his team leading 5th and 6th goals of the season.
San Jose Earthquakes (1-3-1) midfielder Ramiro Corrales put in a header in the 42nd minute from a corner kick by Ronnie O’Brien. There wasn’t much Columbus goalkeeper William Hesmer was going to do to stop that one.
The Earthquakes kept the pressure on into the second half until the Crew found its rhythm in the 73rd minute. Robbie Rogers lead the Crew on a goal scoring flurry that left San Jose down 3 – 1.
The Crew utilized Rogers speed on the left side and Emmanuel Ekpo passed one over to him, which he broke past the defenders and faced down Quakes keeper Joe Cannon. Rogers easily put it through Cannon’s legs on a hard low shot to the post.
Rogers’s second goal was only 8 minutes later. He took a pass from Alejandro Moreno and did a quick dribble around a diving Cannon, easily slipping it into a clear net.
Brad Evans put in the insurance goal 2 minutes later to the dismay of the Quakes. He took a pass from Guillermo Schelotto and put it into the net. Schelotto continues to dominate the scoreboards on assists, moving to 5 for the season.
The Earthquakes certainly did not give up on the match. With only a minute left to play, Ned Grabavoy sent a long kick from the corner across to the opposite side of the box, finding Ryan Johnson out-jumping the Columbus defender and heading it into the goal.
It was not enough to bring the Quakes a victory or even a tie. The Crew held on through stoppage time to a victory.
This moves the Columbus Crew to 6-1-0 and the Earthquakes move to 1-4-1.
