Santa Clara, CA - The San Jose Earthquakes lost to the league leading Chivas USA tonight, 0-1. Chivas scored in the second half on a mistake by the defense, and were able to hold on to that lead for another win.

This game started off with a higher level of intensity than most games. Both teams were making strong passes and attempts on goal in the first 10 minutes.

San Jose was the first to attack in the second minute, as a wide open Shea Salinas fired a post bouncing shot after receiving a quick pass. San Jose did put up a few more attempts on goal during the quarter, including another nice looking play in the 24th minute that found Arturo Alvarez almost lobbing a shot over the keepers head, only to have it swatted back over the bars.

Chivas did not score in the first half either, and they seemed to control the pace of most of the first half. San Jose and Chivas both put 4 shots on goal in the first half.

Not long into the second half the Quakes gave up the first goal to the Chivas. In the 54th minute, Chivas forward 17 had a long pass coming in to the middle of the penalty box and Cannon backed off grabbing it on Garcia’s call. Chivas Braun took advantage and fired it low and left passed Cannon for a goal.

The Chivas continued during the second half to play to their organized, strong passing game. The Quakes passing game looked out of synch. Compared to the Chivas.

Desparation started to set in for the Quakes in the 80th minute. Either that or the Chivas wrote this one off as a win. The Quakes put most of the shots up in the last 10 minutes with the energy of Quincy Amarikwa and Ryan Johnson. The Chivas seemed to be completely on defensive, their strong, strategic passing game went out the window.

Unfortunately, the last minute energy wouldn’t be enough to equalize, as the Chivas held on to their 1 goal lead for the win.
