Santa Clara – the San Jose Earthquakes faced the New York Redbulls in a U.S. Open Cup match at Buck Shaw stadium and were defeated by one goal, 1-2. This was not a regular season match, so there were more reserve players on the field for the match.
New York scored very early in the match, in fact Mike Petke of New York scored from inside the box unassisted as he put the goal past Quakes backup keeper Andrew Weber.
San Jose was able to finally equalize in the 71st minute, as Pablo Campos fired in an unassisted goal up close against Redbulls keeper Danny Ceperos.
The Quakes were unable to hold on to the equalizer, or even score again, and New York came back 9 minutes later and scored again. Even though the Quakes put up some strong attempts toward the end, the game ended with New York 2, San Jose 1.
San Jose plays regular season match this Saturday at home at 7:30pm.
