EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The New York Red Bulls scored two goals to beat the San Jose Earthquakes. Both goals came late in the game, coming at the 70th minute, and the final goal in stoppage time. This moves the Earthquakes to 1-3-0, and it improves the Red Bulls to 2-1-1.
In a scoreless first half, the Red Bulls seemed to have the strongest plays on goal. The Earthquakes defense was not willing to let them score though. Certainly John Wolyniec was the playmaker of the day for the Red Bulls as he setup attempts all through the game that caused the Quakes trouble.
In the second half, it was Wolyniec who setup forward Jozy Altidore for what looked like a good attempt to get the ball in the net. It turned out to be a tripping call in the box on Ryan Cochrane who did stop him from shooting. Unfortunately, that call setup a penalty kick for the Red BuInstead of Altidore taking his shot, they put in Mike Magee and he blasted it past Cannon.
The Quakes tried to rally it back quickly, with Guerrero firing a cross over to the box to Kei Kamara. Kamara had a dazzling header that went to the near post. Fortunately for the Red Bulls, Goalkeeper Jon Conway was on his game and stopped it with a dive to his right.
Nick Garcia had some really awesome saves today in the box. In the last minutes of the game, the Red Bulls Wolyniec had setup Altidore again, who headed it past Cannon. Nick Garcia had the right moves, getting back to save a certain goal from going in.
The Quakes could not get the ball to the back of the net though the rest of the night, and the Red Bulls Altidore and Wolyniec hooked up again to find the magic. Altidore tapped a shot off the post and got his second goal of the season.
Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop had this to say about the game: “It was a bit of an off game for us. We didn’t create as much as we would have liked going forward. However, we did have some success stopping them and the game seemed to be a bit of a stalemate. I thought we could have come out of the game with a tie, but a couple of plays at the end and that is the game.”
