Santa Clara, CA - Opening night for the San Jose Earthquakes did not bring the high energy win they had hoped for. The New England Revolution would hold on to a one goal lead to defeat San Jose.

The first half would see San Jose putting most of the pressure on the largely inexperienced defensive team of New England. In the 25th minute, Arturo Alvarez sparked a nice attempt on goal where he beat several defenders and sent a pass to Johnson that found fan favorite Huckerby drilling a strong shot that just missed.

New England would come out of half time looking stronger and more focused on the net. New England found what they were looking for in the 54th minute, as Kheli Dube put a goal in that was passed over from his team mate Larentowicz. The thing that disappointed the fans is that Quakes defender Kelly Gray looked to catch the pass and hit it with his head, but it still landed in Kheli Dube’s striking range.

Second half offensive pressure was again in favor of the Quakes. The intensity level of both sides stepped up in the last 20 minutes of the game, as the Revolution started feeling they could shut down the Quakes offense. The Quakes continued to pressure, seeking for the equalizer that just would not come.

San Jose had so many corner kicks that they could not convert throughout the entire game. They did a great job of forcing defenders to give up the corners, but they could not convert to any goals.
