SAN FRANCISCO-- The San Jose Earthquakes and Houston Dynamo finished in a 0-0 draw in the only game to be played at Kezar Stadium this year.
Coming off a three-game sweep in England, it was San Jose's fourth consecutive shutout and win.
The Earthquakes' Brad Ring was replaced by Simon Elliott in the 24th minute. Elliott later had to be replaced by Antonio Ribeiro but is okay. In the 42nd minute, the Dynamo's Luis Angel Landin received a yellow card for an encounter with Chris Leitch.
San Jose's Cornell Glen got into an altercation with former Earthquake Ryan Cochrane during the 77th minute. Glen received a yellow card as a result.
Through San Jose Chris Wondolowski's eyes, concerning the game, "it's always a battle when you play against a good team...physical...good too get a zero." Regarding the referees relaxed approach to calls in the second half, Chris Wondolowski commented, "I think it took a little bit ouf of both teams."
From Earthquakes' goaltender Joe Cannon's view, the game was "good. Tonight didn't have to do much. Gritty game...Missed an open goal or two. Jason had a critical tackle in the first and in the second and Bobby had head balls that neutralized their game." Houston had 4 saves to San Jose's 0.
Regarding the upcoming season, Earthquakes' Jason Hernandez remarked, "In my 3 years, I haven't been as excited for a season as I have for this one."
San Jose's coach Frank Yallop expressed that the game was a "good exercise...all in all happy with the performance, but disappointed with the result." He mentioned the team's "depth" as there "wasn't a big drop off from the first to second half" and that te team was "defensively strong," and "pretty good all season," with the exception of the first game.
Game notes: 2.116 people attended the game. Also playing in the game was former Earthquake Cam Weaver. One of the Earthquakes' fan groups were present, eagerly demonstrating their enthusiasm, although there was a flare-throwing incident which caused some smoke in the stands. Regarding San Jose Earthquakes owner Lew Wolff's comments earlier in the day discouraging an MLS strike, Wondolowski also remarked that the possible strike is "definitely a concern. We believe that we have non-economical player rights that won't hurt the league," and that a strike would be the "last resort."
