Santa Clara, CA - The Quakes took out the Colorado Rapids tonight at Buck Shaw stadium 2-0. Cam Weaver and Ryan Johnson would lead the offense again, continuing the Quakes undefeated pre-season.

Ryan Johnson’s pre-season momentum continued tonight as he started as a forward with Cam Weaver. It didn’t take them long to come together for a goal. Only 8 minutes into the first half, Johnson took a pass up the left side and beat the defender for a clean look at the goal. The Rapids keeper “ “ came across to stop him as the ball flew by him to a waiting Cam Weaver. Weaver put it right in the net with a clean header.

Cam Weaver, with his height, strength, and experience, is playing to be a formidable forward for the Quakes. The long balls that come to him are not being lost, but he is bringing them down and working to setup plays with the rest of the offense, including Alvarez, Huckerby, and Johnson.

The Quakes did have to pay close attention to Colorado’s Omar Cummings. He consistently throughout the first period exhibited deadly speed and accuracy with the ball. Unfortunately for the Rapids, the rest of the offense did not keep up with him, and they created only 2 shots on the goal the entire first half.

Right before the first half ended, the Quakes struck net again. Huckerby forced a turnover and a free kick just outside the side of the box. This would result in Alvarez kicking a shot right to newcomer Jamil Roberts. Roberts sent the ball into the net with a clean header.

The second half wasn’t short on action, it was just short on goals. The Quakes had a good series of plays around the 70th minute where Salinas and Huckerby forced the Rapids to give them corner kicks, but they couldn’t turn them into goals.

The Rapids started the second half with some energy and coordinated attacks, but as the half went on, and their subs came in, they seemed to drop off in intensity.

As the game came to an end, Salinas forced another corner as he almost had a shot on goal, but again there was no conversion to a goal.

The Quakes play Colorado again on March 2nd in an away game, as they head to Loyola Marymount University.
