SAN FRANCISCO- What do you say when you are playing in one bowl game and wishing you were in another? The answer is nothing? Just be happy you are not watching all the games. And that brings us to the Emerald Bowl where Maryland (6-6, 3-5) met Oregon State (8-4, 6-3) for the first time in the schools’ history. So who will win the war of aquatic wildlife the turtle or the beaver?

My first question is how in the heck does a Testudo’s homies get into a bowl game with a 3-5 conference schedule? Never mind that question for now; we all know that the Terps are playing for their coach’s job and are fortunate to be at any bowl game.

Let’s look at Oregon State whose fans were in full effect. There was so much orange at the Emerald Bowl, had it been a shade lighter I might have thought I was at a Tennessee game. The Beavers turned a bad start to a season on its ear with a victory over a number two ranked California and the 18th ranked Oregon Duck; their in-state rivals. The Beavers success has come from senior running back Yevenson Bernard who had 12 touchdowns and rushed for 1095 yards this season.

I thought this game was going to be an OSU blowout, but it turned out to be a battle of who could keep the ball long enough to score. The best thing I saw in four quarters of football was Testudo the Terp wearing a rain poncho. I though turtles loved the water. Man up Testudo; what is your shell made of papier-mâché?

The crowd of 32,517 (the second largest crowd in the Emerald Bowls six year history) didn’t seem to mind the cold, or the rain they just wanted to see their team play. You have to love the fans though. The sparse number of Maryland fans and the Oregon State faithful braved the elements to see Barry Bond hit home run number 756. Ok, maybe they are a little late for that, but they still witnessed Yvenson Bernard run for 177 yards on 38 carries, and James Rogers run for 115 yards on 10 carries.

This is my second Emerald Bowl, and I have enjoyed myself both times. We all know that this bowl game is not a BCS game, but to the credit of those men and women who work to make this game better every year, I salute you
