After a less than stellar 2008 season the Cal Bears (8-4) suiting up against the University of Miami in the Emerald Bowl. The Bears have struggled on both sides of the ball, but their biggest struggles begin and end at the quarterback position. Neither Kevin Reilly nor Nate Longshore have give Cal the much needed leadership that hasn’t been there since Aaron Rogers was under center. Cal will rely heavily on Javid Best and his fourteen touchdowns and 1,459 in rushing yards.

For the past three years Cal seems to be its own worst enemy. They play well at the beginning of the season, and then by the end of the season they imploded leaving any hopes of a BCS Bowl bid in the wind. It has to leave fans dumbfounded. The Rose Bowl or the Poinsettia Bowl? Humm, let me think. This year there was no choice, and they should be thankful to the good people of the Emerald Bowl just for the invitation. Note to Jeff Tedford: Cal Bear fans deserve better. The University has given you everything you requested. They even had to throw some folks out of trees to make it happen. Show when you going to give the fans something to really cheer about?

The University of Miami is playing with a new commitment to being a dominant football program again. They will take no prisoners.

My wish for this Emerald Bowl is that both teams give the fans a game that will have everyone talking. And my wish for the Cal Bears is that they begin their journey toward becoming the team that we’ve been waiting for.
