In one season University of Miami Head Coach Randy Shannon is bringing his University of Miami Hurricanes to the Bay Area and the sixth annual Emerald Bowl at AT&T Park. The Canes (7-5) play visitor to the local favorites Cal Bears (8-4).
Miami is a team who is learning how to win again. In 2006 the “U” was troubled with poor performance on the field, players with a lack of discipline, a Head Coach with no control of his players, and the death of defensive tackle Bryan Pata in a off campus incident. At the end of the 2006 season fans of the University of Miami were left scratching their heads and wondering what would become of their beloved football program. Salvation came in the name of Randy Shannon, a former Hurricane linebacker, and a member of the 1987 National Championship team.
Shannon came in and quietly and quickly turned around a program that had imploded. He brought back the discipline on and off the field of play, and he brought back the fun to Hurricane football. But, can the “U” take that first step back towards former NCAA dominance with a win against the Bears? The answer is yes. The Hurricanes have played a much tougher schedule than Cal and it seems that when Cal needs to win, they can’t buy a win. One thing is for sure, the Emerald Bowls are getting better every year, and Saturday’s game between the University of Miami and the University of California will be fun for all.
