Sportsradio: Michelle the Cal Bears 8-5 (5-3) after they lost Javhid Best to a concussion three weeks ago running back Shane Vereen stepped in and took care of business particularly going 42-193 and three touchdowns in the Big Game in Stanford. How did you like what he did for Cal filling in after Best went down?
Shane Vereen did his job and he did it well. Let's see if he can keep the momentum going for next season. Cal did a good job of cooling down an hot Stanford Cardinal team.
Sportsradio: The Bears face off against the Washington Huskies 4-7 (3-5) on Saturday night at Qwest Field in Seattle in the final regular season game. The Bears of course will be battling for the best Bowl possible and the Huskies will be fighting for pride. What do you like about these two teams and what do you think will be the outcome?
I don't like anything about these teams right now. There is no pride in a 3-5 conference record, and there is no pride in Cal being a sinking ship in the Pac-10. Cal has given Tedford everything he's asked for . . . when is Cal going to get a team that can stay competitive for a entire season?
Sportsradio: Stanford Men's basketball are 3-3 and have seen a huge drop off in their talent coming into this season due to graduations. The Cardinal lost two of three in the Cancun Challenge last week and have a three game home stand going which opened on Sunday against Portland State, and will meet UC Davis and Oklahoma State in home games coming up. How crucial do you see this home stand to help the Cardinal get some wins and catch up a bit?
The season is still young and as long as Stanford can stay at the top of the Pac-10 they will get an invitation to the dance. What happens then is what movies are made of.
Final Thoughts
1. Tiger Woods was in an accident this past weekend. He drove into a tree and a fire hydrant at 2 o'clock in the morning. I don't care what happened between you and your wife Tiger, but the fact that you are not talking to the police doesn't look good. Own up to whatever you did. I am glad that you were not seriously hurt. Everyone has a bone head moment or two, the difference is, not everyone has the money or status not to talk to the police.
2. Congratulations to the TCU Horned Frogs for winning the Mountain West Conference. Let's hope you don't get screwed next week by the BCS Bowl Selection Committee.
3. Charlie Weiss has probably coached his last game at Notre Dame. I can't say I'm happy about it, but I will say that Weiss' record was worse than Ty Willingham's and he was able to play out the first four years of his contract. Notre Dame, you get what you pay for. As for Weiss, he will get another job in the NFL and be the fantastic offensive coordinator he was before this golden detour.
4. Speaking getting the ax . . . goodbye to Lawrence Frank. The now former head coach of the New Jersey Nets. It took loosing 16 games to realize he wasn't getting the job done guys??? Really?? He wasn't doing the job last year. You could have saved yourself some embarrassment and fired him then and allowed a new coach to come in and develop a plan to pull this team out of the toilet. Hey Jay-Z! If you are part owner in the Nets why are you hanging out at the Knicks games?
5. It's almost time for the Heisman Trophy award to be given out and I would like to go on record saying that Tim Tebow should not get the award. He has played well, but the fact that some of his stats were padded on the backs of teams like Florida International doesn't sit well with me.
My choice this year is as follows: 1) Toby Gerhart of Stanford. Gerhart played like a champion without all the hype and pomp and circumstance as Tebow. He came from out of nowhere to be at the top of his game in his senior year. He has proven himself to be the best of the best playing college football today. My second choice is a toss up between Mark Ingram of Alabama and Colt McCoy of Texas. Both have played consistent football and have proven themselves to be team leaders.
Tim Tebow is a great talent and I hope will go on to have a wonderful professional career. I think he will be the first Florida QB to actually have a career and not flounder after leaving the system. His legacy is written in stone, no need to give him awards for showing up.
