Tiger honorary captain for Stanford coin toss: Tiger Woods will be doing the coin toss at the Big Game this Saturday at the Farm when Cal pays a visit to the mighty Cardinal.
The way Stanford demolished USC last Saturday at Coliseum and beat them up and every which way the fans at the Farm will be really pumped up for the Cardinal with Tiger in the house and the incentive going on on Big Game day.
The Cardinal are ranked high in the AP polls coming into the contest this Saturday and it's deserved in spades. USC head coach Pete Carroll is still crying in his soup just a tad over that loss to Stanford and with two Pac Ten loses the other biggie to Oregon and the Trojans can forget the Rose Bowl realistically.
Also boo hoo hoo for Carroll who asked Cardinal head coach Jim Hargaugh "what's the deal" at the mid field post game hand shake after Harbaugh called for a conversion to run up the score. Carroll who has been portrayed to do no wrong in the last decade got his butt handed to him and should shut up and deal with it.
As for Stanford running back Toby Gerhart he is one of the best backs in this country that you don't know about. You have to think "oh my gosh we are Stanford we work so good and we have to celebrate that" and that's why Tiger is coming out and being an honorary captain for the coin toss and the whole bit.
With the Big Game weekend, "the play" 27 years later.
Good for you Ann Killion: Congratulations are in order for former San Jose Mercury News columnist Ann Killion who is doing the TV show "Chronicle Live". This was a smart move by Killion and she had the smarts to see where the Merc was going on job cuts and the status of the industry and took her buy out at the Merc and left for doing TV at the Chronicle.
I remember 12 years ago doing an interview with her about women in the business in my column and you kind of sensed that things were coming due with all the changes that have gone on and it's not surprising that the Merc couldn't handle having her any more. If a writer is smart they will continue to dabble and embrace the broadcast side of the equation.
They can do both then the doors will stay open and Killion found one that was open and got the chance to walk right through it. Good for her.
New Jersey Devils finally lose on the road: New Jersey will be a factor in the cup race as they finally lost a game on the road on Tuesday night and they only proved that their human and they will be the class of the east and the former defending champ and they're serving notice early with a nice nine game roll on the road early.
The Devils are in first place with 28 points at 14-5-0 and it's a good thing that the Devils are ratcheting up a bit and they have good direction on the bench and the fact that they are gritting it out as an organization it's really good.
Looking at last year's post season they should have not lost to Carolina in the first round last year. The way they lost to Carolina in that first round is obviously eating at their souls.
They're trying to learn a lesson and they're going to get better and if there is a parallel with a team on the other side of the aisle of the schedule the San Jose Sharks and the New Jersey Devils are matching book ends as the leagues two best teams.
The Devils are trying to figure out what to do winning in the regular season and it is always a very good start but come playoff time talk to me when it really counts. When you get into the post season everything changes and it's a whole different attitude and the amount of body injuries are the name of the game.
It used to be fun to see the injury report and the scratches before each of the games as the season winds down by March and see who stands up to and gets ready for post season action in the NHL.
