Chase Utley homered twice, Cliff Lee went nearly eight strong innings, and the Phillies hung on to take game five of the 2009 World Series 8-6 over the New York Yankees at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
The Yankees still maintain a 3-games-to-2 lead in the best-of-seven, which returns to The Bronx for game six on Wednesday night. Andy Pettitte will go on short rest for New York, while Philadelphia counters with Pedro Martinez, the losing pitcher in game two.
New York threatened in the top of the ninth inning, but Derek Jeter grounded into a double play, and Mark Teixeira struck out to end the game.
Utley hit a three-run homer in the second off A.J. Burnett and added a solo shot in the seventh. He joined Reggie Jackson as the only players to hit five home runs in a single World Series.
A two-run double by Alex Rodriguez chased Lee in the eighth inning. After Jorge Posada doubled and Hideki Matsui drove him in to start the ninth, Phils reliever Ryan Madson held on to earn the save.
The Yankees lost the services of center fielder Melky Cabrera for the remainder of the Series due to a strained left hamstring. Backup infielder Ramiro Pena replaced Cabrera on the roster.
Eric Hinske earned a unique distinction when he walked as a pinch-hitter for the Yankees in the fifth inning. Hinske homered for Philadelphia against Tampa Bay in last year’s World Series and appeared with Boston in the 2007 Classic. He joined Don Baylor as the only players to appear in three consecutive World Series with three different ball clubs.
Baylor did it with Boston in 1986, Minnesota in 1987 and Oakland in 1988.
