Despite their status as defending world champions, the Philadelphia Phillies came to Yankee Stadium perceived as the underdog in game one of the 2009 World Series. All the Phillies did was overcome a six-day layoff, get a complete game from starter Cliff Lee, and upend the New York Yankees 6-1.
Game two is scheduled for Yankee Stadium on Thursday. Pedro Martinez is slated to start for Philadelphia, while the Yankees counter with A.J. Burnett.
While Lee hurled a complete game, Chase Utley homered twice to ignite the Fightin’ Phils offense. With his two round-trippers off losing pitcher C.C. Sabathia, Utley became only the second left-handed hitter to hit two homers off a lefty in a World Series since Babe Ruth did it in 1928 against the Cardinals.
Lee struck out 10 and didn’t walk a batter, the first time since 1949 that a pitcher registered double-digit strikeouts without a walk when Don Newcombe accomplished that feat for the Brooklyn Dodgers, also against the Yanks.
According to STATS, the only other pitcher to fan at least 10 without a free pass was Pittsburgh’s Deacon Phillippe in the first-ever World Series game in 1903 against the Boston Pilgrims.
Lee didn’t surrender a run until the ninth inning, improving to 3-0 with a 0.54 ERA in this postseason.
Derek Jeter had the most success of the Yankee hitters against Lee, with a double and two singles.
In addition to Utley’s solo homers in the third and sixth innings, Raul Ibanez stroked a two-run single in the eighth and Shane Victorino added an RBI single in the ninth.
It was the first World Series win ever for Philadelphia against the Yankees. New York swept the Phillies’ Whiz Kids in four games in 1950.
