The New York Yankees will make a record 40th appearance in the World Series in their storied history. Sunday night at Yankee Stadium, the Yanks defeated the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 5-2 in game six of the American League Championship Series.
New York took the series 4-games-to-2. The Yankees will host National League champion Philadelphia in game one of the World Series Wednesday night. While the Phillies are Major League Baseball’s defending champions, the Yankees are making their first Fall Classic appearance since 2003.
The probables for game one of the World Series involve the last two American League Cy Young Award winners – CC Sabathia for the Yankees and Cliff Lee for the Phillies, both former teammates with the Cleveland Indians.
Alex Rodriguez was tabbed as the ALCS most valuable player. A-Rod, often ridiculed for his lack of production in postseasons past, hit .438 with five home runs and 12 runs batted in against the Angels.
Winning pitcher Andy Pettitte set a postseason record for victories with 16, breaking a tie with John Smoltz; and closer Mariano Rivera hurled a six-out save, giving him an ongoing record of 37 rescues in postseason play.
Johnny Damon’s two-out two-RBI single in the fourth inning chased losing pitcher Joe Saunders. Rodriguez followed with a bases-loaded RBI walk to put New York up 3-1. The Yankees added insurance runs in the eighth on a pair of Angels errors and a sacrifice fly by Mark Teixeira.
The closest Los Angeles would get was 3-2 on a run-scoring single by Vladimir Guerrero in the seventh off Joba Chamberlain.
Since winning their only World Series appearance in 2002, the Angels have yet to return to the Fall Classic despite winning five AL West titles in six years.
