The Rockies managed to shake off the rustiness that plagued them in their Game 1 loss, but when the final out of World Series Game 2 was made tonight, the result was exactly the same – the Red Sox were 2-1 winners.

Backed by the lights-out pitching of starter Curt Schilling and relievers Hideki Okajima and Jonathon Papelbon, the Red Sox pitching allowed only five Colorado hits. The Rockies lone run came in the first inning when Willy Tavares opened the game by getting hit with a pitch. Tavares went to third on a Matt Holliday single and scored on a fielder’s choice by Todd Helton.

Now up 2-0 in the series, momentum and history is sitting squarely in the Bosox’s lap. Of the 50 previous teams who have opened with a 2-0 fall classic lead, 39 have gone on to chug champagne.

Winner Schilling improved his lifetime post-season ledger to 11-2, with a 2.23 ERA, including a 4-1, 2.06 World Series record. Okajima, the Japanese league veteran in his first major league season, was even better, throwing two and a third innings of perfect relief. Okajima entered the game in the with one out in the sixth and two runners on base and one out.

After scoring 10 or more runs in their previous three games, beating the Rox 13-1 on Wednesday night, Boston’s bats were finally quelled by Colorado rookie righty Ubaldo Jimenez who lasted through four and two thirds. The Red Sox got to Jimenez with a game tying sacrifice fly by catcher Jason Veritek in the fourth and an RBI double by third baseman Mike Lowell in the fifth.

Rockie relievers Jeremy Affeldt, Matt Herges, Brian Fuentes and Manny Corpas threw shutout ball the rest of the way.

The series moves to Colorado on Saturday night.
