Game #2 World Series
Sox lead series 2-0
Sunday October 23, 2005
CHICAGO--The Chicago White Sox are now headed for Houston for game three of the World Series after taking the first two games from the Houston Astros. Sunday night's game was a nail biter and the Astros knew they couldn't go back to Houston down 2-0.
The lead changed hands four times and the ball game was tied up at one time or another three times by scores of 2-2, 4-4, and in the ninth inning 6-6 to set the table for the Sox Scott Podsednik batting in the bottom of the ninth inning against Astros reliever Brad Lidge with the bases empty Lidge delivered and Podsednik launched the game winning walk off home run for the 7-6 win.
"I don't think anyone in the ball park was thinking about me hitting the ball out of the ball park." said Podsednik. After the game the Astros hung their heads in the dressing room and made way to the run way to the team bus to take them to the airport for a charter for Houston for Games 3-5. "Well we're not in a good spot we had a chance to win this ball game. We have to go home and regroup. We'll make a series out of this." said Astros manager Phil Garner.
The ball game was delayed seven minutes prior to the first pitch due to rain and the temperature on the field was 45. The Astros kind of was hoping for a rain out if they only knew what was coming up on the horizon in game two.
JC and Kenny G's footnotes: For game three on Tuesday night at Minute Maid Field the White Sox will start Jon Garland (1-0 ERA 2.00), he'll match up against the Astros Roy Oswalt (3-0 2.11). You might remember Oswalt's last outing he beat the Cardinals in the ball game to send the Astros to the World Series after Albert Pujols belted the gamer in Houston. Oswalt won the game pitched on October 19th at Minute Maid 5-1.
Its a must win situation for the Astros and the real test will be in Houston on Tuesday night to see if the White Sox can stay tough on the road against a Astros team whose been successful at home. First pitch is at 5:00PM PDT.
Roger Clemens of the Astros says he feels better from his hamstring injury and should be able to pitch game five if necessary. Clemens had to leave in the second inning due to the hamstring injury in game one on Saturday night at U.S. Cellular. Clemens surrendered three runs in his two innings of his pitching effort.
Joe Cronin and Ken Gimblin are joined at the hip in their coverage of the World Series join them for batting practice and conversation with the Sox and Astros as Joe and Ken take you behind the cage on the teams day off on Monday.
