Philadelphia has made a repeat date with the World Series. The Phillies hammered Los Angeles 10-4 in game five of the National League Championship Series at Citizens Bank Park, closing out the Dodgers 4 games to 1.
Again, it was the Phillies’ power-laden lineup that feasted on LA pitching. Jayson Werth homered twice, and Shane Victorino and Pedro Feliz also hit round-trippers.
Phillies reliever Chad Durbin picked up the win, and Brad Lidge closed it out, though setup man Ryan Madson snuffed out an eighth-inning rally when the Dodgers loaded the bases.
Three of the Dodgers runs came on solo homers by Andre Ethier, James Loney and Orlando Hudson. Vicente Padilla took the loss for LA, lasting less than four innings while giving up the first six Philadelphia runs.
Ryan Howard was selected as the NLCS most valuable player, as the Phils became the first team to make consecutive World Series appearances for the NL since the 1995-96 Atlanta Braves.
This is the Phillies’ seventh trip to the World Series in their 127-year history, winning in 1980 over Kansas City and last year over Tampa Bay. The Phils lost the Fall Classic in 1915, 1950, 1983 and 1993.
The Phillies now await the winner of the ALCS between the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The Yanks lead 3 games to 1. The World Series begins next Wednesday in the American League home park.
