Football is relevant in the Bay Area again and San Francisco appears to have a monopoly on the sport. The Niners are winning (and have corralled their lost sheep, Michael Crabtree) and the California Redwoods, of the brand new United Football League opened their season Thursday night. The Redwoods, who will play home games out of AT&T park this season opened the inaugural UFL season on the road in the Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, NV against the Las Vegas Locomotives.
The Locomotives, behind the arm of former Buffalo Bill quarterback, J.P. Losman defeated the Redwoods 30-17 in front of 14,209 fans. Losman went 21-31 and threw for 226 yards and threw for two touchdown passes.
Las Vegas had the honor of scoring the very first points in the upstart UFL, when kicker Graham Gano nailed a 33-yard field goal late in the first quarter.
The Redwoods fall to 0-1 in this short six-game season. Come out to AT&T park next weekend when the `Woods take on the New York Sentinels, on Saturday October 17 at 6 p.m.
